Tomiko Itooka, the 116-year-old Japanese woman recognized as the oldest person in the world, died of old age.

In September 2024, she was recognized as the oldest person in the world. Itooka was born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Japan, and was the eldest of her three siblings.
Itooka became the oldest person in Japan in December 2023, following the death of 116-year-old Fushi Tatsumi in Cassiwari, Osaka Prefecture Osaka.
She was later recognized as the oldest person in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records in September 2024, following the death of the previous record holder, 117-year-old Maria Branyas Morera from Olot, Catalonia, Spain.
Recall that Japanese princess Yuriko Mikasa passed away at the age of 101.
