NATO's opponent in the exercise will be the fictional state Occasus, similar to Russia.
NATO exercises called Steadfast will begin next week Defender (“Sustainable Defender”), which will involve 90 thousand military personnel from all countries of the bloc, as well as Sweden.
This was announced on Thursday, January 18, by the Commander-in-Chief of the Alliance's combined forces in Europe, Christopher Cavoli, reports Reuters.
The exercise will last several months in Germany, Poland and the Baltic countries, including on the border with the Kaliningrad region of Russia, and will end in May.
“The Alliance will demonstrate its ability to defend the Euro-Atlantic region by transferring forces from North America to Europe,” Cavoli said.
According to ABC, NATO's opponent in the exercise will be the fictitious state of Occasus, which is similar to Russia and, according to the scenario, will attack one of the members of the Alliance, which will provoke the Third World War. During the exercises, it is planned to conduct at least 500 air combat operations.
“This will be a clear demonstration of transatlantic unity and strength, and the determination to continue to do whatever is necessary to mutually defend our shared values and the rules-based international order,” NATO said in a communiqué.
Earlier, Great Britain announced that it would send 20 thousand military personnel for training. In addition, a carrier strike group of eight ships and submarines led by the Queen Elizabeth class flagship, as well as F-35 Lightning fighters and Poseidon P8 surveillance aircraft will take part in the maneuvers.
About 16 thousand British soldiers, along with tanks, artillery and helicopters, will be based in Eastern Europe from February to June 2024. The Royal Navy will station more than 2,000 sailors in the North Atlantic, Norwegian and Baltic seas. In addition, over 400 Royal Marines will be deployed to the Arctic Circle.
Recall that a war between Russia and NATO could break out in three to eight years – this is stated in Poland and the Baltic countries, noting the importance of preparing to confront the aggressor. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin also adds fuel to the fire by periodically threatening the member states of the Alliance. The Bild publication reported the day before that Germany was preparing for a possible armed conflict with the Russian Federation.
TSN.ua collected everything that is known about a possible war between Russia and NATO, which countries are under threat and how they are preparing for it.
