Frightened animal welfare volunteers seized the massive pet after police raided the owner's home. The bloated pooch, named Nuggie, weighed 120 pounds when he was taken to the shelter.
Stunned volunteers said Nuggie needed to rest three times in the 10-meter stretch between the house and the car. His paws could barely support the enormous weight.
When vets put a stethoscope to his chest, they couldn't hear his heartbeat because the sound couldn't penetrate the layers of fat.
The Royal New Zealand Society for the Protection of Animals (SPCA) said he had conjunctivitis, and his claws had grown.
“And he had a lot of ringworm, especially in contact areas like his stomach and elbows,” the charity added.
The owner later admitted feeding Nuggie eight to 10 pieces of chicken daily, in addition to dog liver.
After two months in the care of the SPCA, he had lost 8.9kg. But despite making significant progress, he died suddenly from severe bleeding when a tumour on his liver ruptured.
A post-mortem examination revealed he also suffered from liver disease and Cushing's disease.
The Manukau District Court in Auckland sentenced the local woman to two months in jail and a fine, the SPCA said on Wednesday, July 24. She is banned from owning dogs for a year.
Recall that the missing dog was reunited with her owner after 9 years. She escaped from the backyard back in 2015.
