An American woman who was found chained to a tree in an Indian forest for 40 days has admitted that she did it, not her “husband”.

Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, who was found by a shepherd near Sonurli village, Maharashtra, initially told the hospital that her husband “tied her to a tree in the forest and told her she would die there.”
The woman also said she needed intravenous fluids, claiming she could not even drink water after being injected with a substance for extreme psychosis that causes severe jaw clenching. But after several days in a mental hospital, Kumar admitted that she had tied herself.
She added that she was probably hallucinating when she gave investigators a note saying that her husband had left her to die.
Moreover, she admitted that she had become attached to tree because she was upset that her visa was expiring and her funds were dwindling.
Almost two weeks after her rescue, Dr. Sanghamitra Phule, head of the psychiatric hospital treating Kumar, said her condition was “becoming better.”
He said: “She eats, walks, and also plays sports. She is undergoing treatment and we are also giving her some nutrients that her body was lacking.”
Police found her with a copy of her US passport, which showed she was from Massachusetts, and documents linking her to an address in Tamil Nadu. Kumar also had a mobile phone, tablet and 31,000 rupees (US$369).
