As a Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff races from one success to the next. But the 49-year-old also knows the darker side of life.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is successful, multi-millionaire, has a happy marriage and appears carefree. But: The Viennese also know another side of life.
In an intimate interview with the “Daily Mail”, the boss of Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton looked deeply. He says of the tough PS-circus: “Compared to my childhood, my youth, the struggles I had to go through, it's just great fun.”
Wolff addresses the early loss of his father. “He struggled with a brain tumor for ten years. I remember he was sick from the first moment. I was a teenager when he died and we had practically no money because he couldn't work.”
The result: “I can remember that when I was 14 I wanted to be responsible for myself alone. I didn't want to be dependent on anyone anymore. I knew that I couldn't rely on anyone.”
Wolff is still caught up with the events of that time – in his sleep. “It's a dream I've had since I was a child. It can come back anytime.”
Wolff is currently trying to defend the Formula 1 world championship title with Mercedes. In the constructors' standings, the “Silver Arrows” are 23 points ahead of their rival Red Bull Racing. In the driver standings, Hamilton is twelve points behind Max Verstappen. The next race will take place in Mexico on November 7th.
