More than 2 million people died from natural disasters between 1970 and 2019, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
Urgan consequences
Over the past 50 years, the number of natural disasters around the world has increased fivefold. This is stated in a new report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Excerpts from it are cited on Wednesday, September 1, the UN press service.
The report is a kind of atlas of mortality and economic losses as a result of extreme weather, climate and hydrological events from 1970 to 2019. During this time, more than 11 thousand such natural disasters have occurred in the world. As a result, over 2 million people died and $ 3.64 trillion (€ 3.07 trillion) was damaged.
“In many parts of the world, as a result of climate change, the number of recorded extreme meteorological, climatic and hydrological events is increasing, and their frequency and magnitude will only increase,” said WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas.
There was an average of one natural disaster every day
Over the past 50 years, on average, there has been one natural disaster every day associated with such natural phenomena. These disasters resulted in an estimated 115 deaths per day and $ 202 million (€ 170 million) in daily damages.
Almost a third (31%) of all globally recorded natural disasters occurred in Asia. In Europe, from 1970 to 2019, 1,672 natural disasters were recorded, resulting in the death of 159,438 people. Experts estimated the economic damage at $ 476.5 billion (€ 402.3 billion).
Early warning systems are improving
At the same time, the improvement of early warning systems has led to a significant decrease in the mortality rate in the whole world, said the head of WMO Taalas. “We are now better than ever before at saving lives,” he said.
To date, gaps in meteorological and hydrological observing systems remain predominantly in Africa, parts of Latin America, and the Pacific and Caribbean island states.
