Windows hacked through fonts

by alex

Just one character can destroy Windows. It is reported by the Tom's Guide.

The experts drew attention to the report of the Google Project Zero experts, who spoke about the dangerous vulnerability of the operating system from Microsoft. The document describes the possibility of hacking a computer using a malicious TrueType font – more precisely, a specific character. This font is used in various OS programs such as browsers.

To cause the crash, the user must download the infected version of the font package and unpack the archive. The journalists noted that such malicious files are often distributed on compromised websites and via e-mail. After unpacking the document, a critical error occurs in the system, as a result of which the computer may shut down.

The hacker attack will be successful if the user has not installed the latest Windows update. Experts have noticed that the problem exists in any version of Windows 10 that does not have the February 9 updates installed. Typically, the attack can be carried out through the browsers Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox.

Cybersecurity experts said there is currently no information that the vulnerability has been used for real attacks. However, experts advised Windows users to update their operating systems.

Earlier this year, security experts discovered a command in Windows that could break the system. When you activate a specific link to the OS, a Blue screen of death (BSoD) appears. Microsoft later released an update to fix the bug.
