Yesterday, users noticed that instead of many articles on Wikipedia, including about Joseph Stalin and Madonna, images of the swastika appeared. The Wikimedia Foundation explained what it was.
It was reported that access to the pages was quickly restored. Users have noticed that there is no Nazi flag added in the revision history of the articles.
According to media reports, the English version of Wikipedia was attacked by hackers. On Monday, an unidentified attacker removed content from some articles for several minutes and placed a swastika there.
The Wikimedia Foundation said the volunteer editors removed the vandalism in five minutes. How exactly the hack was carried out remains unclear. The fund also clarified that they have developed over the past years a number of tools to quickly identify and eliminate cases of vandalism on the site. Administrators also added additional protection to the site within 15 minutes of the hack.
