Donald Trump was shot during a campaign rally.
In the American city of Butler, Pennsylvania, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire with an AR-15 rifle on former US President Donald Trump.
Experts from the Defense Express portal spoke about the technical side of the assassination attempt on Trump.
It is noted that the shot was not a single one – the shooter managed to fire several shots before the sniper eliminated him. Firearms acoustics expert Robert Maher came to this conclusion during an audio analysis for The New York Times.
According to him, recordings from the scene of the attack indicate that Crooks fired two volleys: first three, then five shots. Thus, only eight shots were fired, due to which one person was killed and two more were injured. Having noticed the shooter, law enforcement officers almost immediately returned fire.
According to information already announced by the police, the shooter was on the roof of a nearby building and was armed with an AR-15 rifle, the firing range, according to various sources, was from 120 to 135 meters.
Experts note that the AR-15 is a fairly popular semi-automatic rifle in the United States and in the world in general. In military versions known as the M16, it uses 5.56 caliber and has automatic fire.
The weapon is not just one model, but a whole family of rifles, differing in calibers, barrel lengths and customization options. Thus, in the US civilian market the most common version is chambered for the .223 Remington cartridge with a barrel length of 16 inches, but there are also options with a barrel length of 20 inches, as well as for specific calibers, for example 6.5 mm.
The authors of the material note that for a shooter with basic skills, hitting a target at a distance of 120 meters with an AR-15 is not very difficult. US Army soldiers, for example, after completing basic training, are required to engage targets with a standard M16 from a prone position at distances of up to 300 meters. At the same time, the result must be at least 23 out of 40 targets, of which 24 are at distances of 100-200 meters.
