According to the Chancellor, he and Putin exchanged views on the further development of the war in Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz explained why he called Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin on the phone. According to the German politician, he exchanged views on the further development of the war in Ukraine with the Russian dictator.
This was discussed during a press conference in Kiev today, December 2.
On November 15, for the first time in 2.5 years, Olaf Scholz called Vladimir Putin. On December 2 in Kiev, the politician noted that, in his opinion, it is necessary to speak firmly with the dictator.
“With a clear position, clear language and clear facts about what we will do,” Scholz said.
In a conversation with the head of the Kremlin, the chancellor claimed that Ukraine has the right to be a sovereign state and a member of the EU. Russia, however, must end the war and withdraw its troops. At the same time, the dictator's position differs from that expressed by Scholz. Despite this, he believes that this dialogue was necessary in order to clearly express his vision of the situation.
Scholz recalled a long conversation with Putin in Moscow before the full-scale invasion. And then they had disagreements on many issues.
“As I understand it, they decided to start this war two years before it began, but after that, they worked on it specifically,” the chancellor said.
Scholz once again stated that Germany will support Ukraine as long as it takes. And he added that Berlin “stands on the position that there can be no decisions about Ukraine without Ukrainians.”
Recall that earlier Western publications reported on plans for a conversation between Scholz and Putin and noted that it took place on the initiative of the German chancellor. This turned out to be the first conversation between the politicians in recent years. Before that, the German chancellor and Vladimir Putin spoke in December 2022.
