Why Orban should agree to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU – an expert explained the prime minister’s tactics

According to the expert, today Orban is no longer a problem for Ukraine, but for the European Union itself.

Prime Minister -Hungarian Minister Viktor Orbán must agree to the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU at the beginning of 2024.

This was discussed in a conversation between political scientist Vladimir Fesenko and TSN journalist Maria Vasilyeva.

Fesenko expressed the opinion that Orban sharply raised the stakes and began to blackmail Brussels, but not like that. He uses aggressive tactics, which subsequently unblocks the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

“He can now block the decision to begin negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. But then, from a rational point of view, he must give consent. A little later, for example, at the beginning of next year. Why? Because if he agrees to negotiations, he will be able to continue this policy of blackmailing Ukraine and Brussels for several more years… It is more profitable for him to extract concessions from us and at the same time concessions from the European Commission, but now he is acting very brazenly,” Fesenko explained.

Recall that the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán sent a letter in response to an appeal from organizations of the Hungarian community to Ukraine with an appeal to support the start of negotiations on Kyiv’s accession with European Union. He assured that his government “will do everything in its power to protect the rights of the Hungarian community in Ukraine.”
