The ship was built back in Soviet times, and the engines for this ship were produced in Nikolaev. However, after the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation in 2014, Ukraine stopped servicing and selling engines.
On the Russian large anti-submarine ship “Admiral” stationed in the Barents Sea Levchenko” a fire broke out, as reported by the head of the center for strategic communications of the Southern Defense Forces, Dmitry Pletenchuk, on June 10. The fire was powerful, because the Admirals Levchenko is a large anti-submarine ship of the 1155 project. It was built and delivered to the Soviet fleet in 1988. This is a fairly large ship, with a displacement of 7 thousand tons.
Reserve captain of the Ukrainian Navy Andrey Ryzhenko told Channel 24 about this.
“Admiral Levchenko” 163 meters long. This means that it is much larger than a frigate when compared with the ships that Ukraine has. This is an ocean zone ship, the main purpose of which is to search and destroy enemy submarines. It contains launchers of four missiles – these are anti-submarine missile systems. A torpedo is attached to each missile from below, which is disconnected at a certain point and hits the submarine,” the expert said.
According to the military man, there is an anti-aircraft defense system in the stern near the helipad. For the 1980-1990s, this was a very “advanced” Kinzhal complex.
It is known that the last repair on the ship was carried out in 2021. During these works, the ship's gas turbine cruise engines, cooling units, and shut-off valves were to be replaced. In addition, on-board electronics and fire-fighting equipment were to be repaired and modernized.
The ship was built in St. Petersburg, but the main engines – gas turbines – were manufactured in Nikolaev. The Admiral Levchenko has four turbines with 20 thousand horsepower each. Specifically, they provide the ship with the necessary speed.
“Certain technical maintenance work on these gas turbines is especially important to carry out once a year. If they are not carried out, various malfunctions may actually occur. For example, a malfunction of the fuel supply system to the gas turbine. This can happen due to depletion of materials, and this will lead to a large fire,” the expert explained.
A gas turbine is a structure that looks like a two-story building, so, according to the reserve captain of the Ukrainian Navy, a very serious fire could have occurred, which is extremely difficult to curb, so it probably led to significant consequences.
“Not only the equipment, but also the crew can suffer. Since there is a lot of fuel on the ship, which is supplied under pressure, and a high combustion temperature occurs. Therefore, it is likely that on the ship during a fire several compartments burned out,” Andrey Ryzhenko noted.
Recall that the head of the center for strategic communications of the Southern Defense Forces, Dmitry Pletenchuk, also reported that the crew on the ship should have been up to several hundred.
