Who will Trump “call” to end the war in Ukraine: opinion of Ukrainian ex-minister

According to Klimkin, Trump will act not as a politician, but as a businessman accustomed to bargaining hard.

Loud statements of the candidate for US President from the Republican Party, Donald Trump, that he can “end any war with one phone call” is basically pre-election PR. But such audacity indicates that Trump is really ready to take tough and decisive steps to radically change the situation in Ukraine.

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin spoke about this in an interview with OBOZ.UA.

According to him, the question remains how exactly Trump plans to end the war and who is the person he will “call” after a likely election victory.

“Trump really wants to do this. It's absolutely obvious. He repeats it all the time. And if he becomes president, he will be reminded of this almost every day. This is not a matter of one phone call. Of course, this is part of the election rhetoric. But In a figurative sense, Trump says that he is ready for strong and decisive actions,” Klimkin noted.

The diplomat is convinced that Trump really has many opportunities to raise the stakes in this situation and influence it from a position of strength. For example, he could threaten tougher sanctions on the Kremlin and its cronies or significantly increase military support for Ukraine.

“He has the ability to raise the stakes. Will he do this, if so, how and in what order? It depends on him and his administration. In the event that he is elected,” – noted Klimkin.

According to the former minister, Trump now has no clear plan on how to end the war in Ukraine. Most likely, he will act like a businessman, aware of the nuances and ready to make “exchanges”.

“That is, from the very beginning he does not prescribe conditions for himself. He says: I will do it. And on what conditions? We will conduct tough trade. The important thing is that he is ready to conduct tough trade,” – the diplomat emphasized.

Recall that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled a peace plan that should “end the war on the right terms for Ukraine and the West.” Johnson said that with this plan, Trump will have a huge chance not only to correct the mistakes of his predecessor, but also to lead the world forward.
