WHO: we do not call the AT.1 coronavirus Russian, countries should not be stigmatized

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it would not call the AT.1 coronavirus strain the Russian variant. According to WHO, countries should not be stigmatized due to the origin of the COVID-19 mutation.

“WHO is tracking the AT.1 variant included in the list for further monitoring, which was first detected in Russia. However, we would not call it “the Russian version”. No country should be stigmatized for identifying and reporting options, ”said a spokesman for WHO TASS.

The organization recalled that variants of the coronavirus of concern and interest are indicated by the letters of the Greek alphabet. AT.1 does not apply to such. It is assigned to 14 other strains from different countries on the monitoring list.
