The FBI is considering the shooting an attempt to assassinate Trump.
The man who attempted to kill former US President Donald Trump has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
The New York Post and CNN report this.
The New York Post's sources said the man was sitting on the roof of a manufacturing plant more than 400 feet from the stage. The FBI is treating the shooting as an assassination attempt on Trump.
“We had what we call an assassination attempt on our former President Donald Trump this evening. It's still an active crime scene,” said Kevin Rojek, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Pittsburgh Field Office.
Media also reported that an AR rifle was found at the scene.
Recall that an assassination attempt was made on former US President and Republican candidate in the upcoming elections, Donald Trump, on Saturday, July 14, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The US Secret Service, which is responsible for the security of former and current presidents, said, that Trump was safe. The service said in a statement that the suspected shooter fired several shots toward the stage from a high position. He was subdued by service personnel and died. One spectator was also killed and two others were seriously injured and remain in critical condition.
US President Joe Biden condemned the violence against his election rival and expressed his support.
“There is no place for this kind of violence in America,” he said. “We must come together as a nation to condemn it.”
The White House chief said he was relieved to learn that Trump was safe and well: “My prayers are with him and his family, and with everyone who was at the event, as we await further information.”
