“Several characteristics of Omicron, in particular its global distribution and a large number of mutations, indicate that it can seriously influence the course of the pandemic, “he said.

The WHO Director General also noted that it is now difficult to predict what kind of impact is being said. Experts record an increase in the infectivity of the virus. At the same time, it was previously reported that there is data indicating that Omicron causes a milder form of coronavirus than the Delta strain. However, the WHO says that it is too early to draw certain conclusions.

Recall, the WHO reported that the new version of COVID-19 “Omicron” as of December 7 was recorded in the territory of 57 countries of the world . At the same time, according to the Ministry of Health, as of December 9, not a single case of this new strain has been recorded in Ukraine.

Earlier, the chief infectious disease specialist of the United States, Anthony Fauci, stated that according to preliminary data, the Omicron COVID strain “is arguably less dangerous than Delta.” He pointed out that in South Africa, where Omicron is gradually becoming the dominant strain, there is no significant increase in hospital admissions.
