The World Health Organization (WHO) recorded a record number of coronavirus infections in the world over the past week: the increase in those infected in the world was 2.4 million. The organization announced this in Geneva on Tuesday, October 20, reports TASS.
“The number of new cases of COVID-19 continues to grow at an accelerated rate, while the number of new deaths remains relatively stable. As of October 18, more than 40 million cases and 1.1 million deaths have been reported. Including over the last week more than 2.4 million new cases of the disease and 36 thousand new deaths were registered, ”the organization said.
In Europe, a 25 percent increase in the incidence has been recorded over the previous seven days. Most of all died in the past week in India: more than 5.6 thousand people. This is followed by the United States (4.8 thousand), Brazil (3.5 thousand), Argentina (2.4 thousand) and Mexico (2.1 thousand).
According to the Johns Hopkins University project, 40,612,044 people are infected in the world. Since the start of the pandemic, more than 1.12 million people have died, and more than 27.76 million have recovered.
Earlier in October, WHO named the only effective cure for the coronavirus. The head of WHO, Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus, said that only dexamethasone has proven effective in treating severe disease. Trials of hydroxychloroquine, considered a promising treatment for the virus, have recently been discontinued, he said.
An outbreak of pneumonia COVID-19 caused by a novel coronavirus was first recorded in December 2019 in Wuhan. On March 11, WHO announced that the situation could be characterized as a pandemic.
