WHO: in two months the world recorded a twofold increase in the incidence of COVID-19

Over the past two months, an almost two-fold weekly increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus has been registered in the world. This was stated by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus during a briefing in Geneva on April 16, TASS reports.

According to him, these statistics bring the planet closer to the highest infection rate during a pandemic. In addition, countries that were previously able to avoid widespread infection are now facing a sharp increase in the number of cases.

So, Gebreyesus drew attention to the fact that in Papua New Guinea until the beginning of 2021, less than 900 cases of COVID-19 and nine deaths were detected, and now more than 9,300 cases of infection and 82 deaths have been registered.

According to the WHO, the increase in the incidence of coronavirus infection continues for the seventh consecutive week, and the increase in mortality for the fourth week in a row.

Earlier, the World Health Organization said that British mutations of the coronavirus were found in two more countries in the past 14 days. The total number of states on whose territory the VOC 202012/01 strain was recorded has reached 132.
