WHO: Delta strain is twice as infectious as the original coronavirus
Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization Sumiya Swaminathan said that the new delta coronavirus strain is twice as contagious as the original virus, RIA Novosti reports.
According to her, the strain may become dominant in the world. A patient with this strain can infect “two, four, six or even eight people.”
“The good news is that most of the vaccines around the world appear to be effective at least at preventing severe disease,” she said.
At the same time, Swaminathan added that despite vaccination, people should wear protective equipment and maintain social distance.
Earlier, Nikolai Nikitin, professor of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, said that the active spread of the Indian strain of coronavirus in Russia is not associated with hot weather.
He stressed that only social factors affect the spread of the virus.
Recall that specialists from the FMBA of Russia have identified new COVID-19 mutations that can change the biological properties of the virus and its clinical manifestations, including reducing the effectiveness of vaccines and drugs.
