The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the need for booster doses of the vaccine for long-term protection against coronavirus infection. This was stated by a senior researcher at the World Health Organization Sumiya Swaminathan, RIA NovostiRIA Novosti reports.
According to a representative of the organization, revaccination is necessary for those who have weakened immunity, healthy people do not need a third injection.
“I think everyone wants to know how many booster doses will be needed and when, but this is what we do not know. Because there are many factors …. First is the type of vaccine. Each vaccine works differently, and continuous observation gives us information about the effectiveness of vaccines against severe disease and re-infection, ”the specialist said.
The body's defenses are also affected by new strains of coronavirus that spread in different ways, as well as the biological characteristics of each individual, added Swaminathan.
Earlier, the president of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), Giorgio Palu, said that double vaccination cannot fully protect against omicron, since the strain has the ability to bypass antibodies obtained both during vaccination and after recovery. Palu believes that a third booster and a 40-fold increase in antibodies will strengthen the immune system and protect the body.
