Russia needs to accelerate with the provision of data on the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine for its early approval. This was requested by the head of the European department of the World Health Organization (WHO) Hans Kluge during a briefing, which was broadcast on Facebook.

He recalled that the developers of the Russian drug have submitted applications for vaccine approval both to WHO and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). “We need to expedite the provision of all information, the entire data package [about the vaccine], so that we can indicate the date of approval of the drug,” – said Kluge.

Earlier, Reuters announced the intention of the EU countries to enter into negotiations with the developers of the Russian vaccine against the Sputnik V coronavirus. It is noted that the launch of the process will require requests from four EU countries. In addition, according to the agency's interlocutor, Italy is exploring the possibility of manufacturing “Sputnik V” at the ReiThera plant, where the country's largest bioreactor for the production of vaccines is located. The EU said that such negotiations are not yet underway.

Sputnik V is the first registered Russian coronavirus vaccine based on adenovirus. The drug is registered in more than 50 countries. Currently, the development of Russian scientists is among the ten best vaccine candidates in the list of the World Health Organization.
