WHO announces new record for weekly increase in COVID cases

Over the past week (from November 16 to 23), about 4 million people in the world have become infected with the coronavirus. This follows from the weekly report of the World Health Organization.

Thus, WHO again recorded a record increase in cases. The number of deaths from COVID-19 also increased – there were 67 thousand. A week earlier, WHO reported 60 thousand deaths.

The organization's experts noted that the rate of spread of the disease has slowed down: decreasing trends are observed in Europe and Southeast Asia. Nevertheless, the European Region remains the largest source of new cases and deaths.

The increase in new patients and deaths from COVID-19 continues in the Americas. In Africa, the number of new cases is relatively small, but there is the strongest increase in cases (plus 15% per week) and deaths (plus 30% per week).

According to the WHO, on the evening of November 24, 58.9 million people were diagnosed with coronavirus worldwide. Died from the disease 1.39 million people. Johns Hopkins University, which collects information on the spread of the coronavirus in real time, reports 59.7 million cases and 1.4 million deaths. The Worldometer service counted 60.1 million cases and 1.41 million deaths.

The WHO said that the death rate from coronavirus in the past two weeks in the world increased by 18%. On average, one person dies from the disease every 17 seconds.

WHO's special envoy for COVID-19, David Nabarro, said Europe is facing a third wave of disease in the first months of 2021 if countries do not create the necessary infrastructure to fight the infection.
