The European Union Intellectual Property Office has found that Reddit and Twitter are the most popular platforms for discussing pirated content. To do this, scientists analyzed 3.9 million public discussions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit. The organization concluded that about a third (35%) of all discussions of digital content on the Internet “may be associated with piracy.”
The study was conducted in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Poland and Sweden. In addition to the main languages of the countries, discussions in English were also taken into account.
98% of all discussions about piracy-related TV shows took place on Reddit. On the same platform, movies were most often discussed (89%). At the same time, Twitter was most often used to discuss pirated books (57%) and music (68%). Facebook has proven to be the least popular way to discuss pirated content, in part because the company is removing many of these posts and also because most of these discussions are not publicly held.
Digital books turned out to be the most discussed illegal content: over 61% of all discussions about them were related to piracy. Next come TV series (48%), music (43%), films (38%), sporting events (32%) and video games (18%).
