Leonardo da Vinci created one one of the most recognizable paintings is the “Mona Lisa” on the shores of Lake Como in the Lombardy region. This became known through an analysis carried out by scientist Anne Pizzorusso.

The Guardian writes about this.

A scientist has used her knowledge of geology and art history to discover that Leonardo da Vinci created one of the most recognizable paintings in history on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy.

The scientist examined the background in the image and compared the bridge, mountain range and lake on Moni League with views of the southwestern Alps of Lecco in the 14th century. This region of northern Italy was visited by Leonardo da Vinci 500 years ago.

“The arched bridge was ubiquitous throughout Italy and Europe, and many of them looked very similar. It is impossible to determine the exact location from the bridge. They all talk about the city, and no one talks about the geology. Geologists don't look at paintings, and art historians do not look at geology,” the scientist emphasized.

She also added that the rocks in Lecco are made of limestone, which is what Leonardo depicted in gray and white in the painting. Also, neither Bobbio nor Arezzo has a lake visible behind the woman in the portrait.

“Art historians make their own guesses about where the Mona Lisa was painted. Everyone who sees the bridge thinks it was there. But Pizzorusso convincingly pinpointed the location, adding evidence of Leonardo's presence in the area, its geology and, of course, cities,” assesses the results of the study by scientist Michael Daly, director of ArtWatch UK.

Recall that researchers discovered a rare ingredient in the paint that Leonardo da Vinci used to paint the Mona Lisa in the 16th century.
