On April 26, 1986, the largest man-made disaster in the entire history of mankind took place — the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The accident resulted in the release of radioactive isotopes of certain elements: cesium, strontium, plutonium and americium. Most of all, radioactive cesium and strontium got into the environment. Some scientists believe that by 2050, when strontium and cesium decay, people will be able to “be in the Zone without health consequences.” However, at the same time in Chernobyl for a long time it will be impossible to engage in agriculture, drink water and breathe without a respirator in strong winds.
Other researchers claim that the radiation level will become “permissible” only after 20 thousand years. At the same time, they assume that people will adapt to radiation faster than the Zone will be completely cleared.
But the popular answer that it will be possible to settle in a million years does not make any sense. The fact is that by that time the landscape will have completely changed, and all the infected layers will be very deep underground.
The “radioactive cloud” fell on the ground unevenly, so today only certain parts of the Zone are dangerous. To date, tours to Chernobyl are officially permitted and controlled at the state level, therefore, a dosimetric check is carried out at the exit from the Zone.
