WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, but if you store your backup in the cloud, authorities can access unencrypted messages from Google Drive or iCloud. Earlier it was reported that the messenger is working on a technology for independent encryption of backups in the cloud. Now it finally works.
Encryption was included in the beta version of the Android app (2.21.15.5). Now the chat history should be stored in a protected form. However, there is one subtlety: if the user forgets his password or loses the 64-digit recovery key, the correspondence will be blocked for him too.
This option will soon be available to all WhatsApp users. The service is also working on a version of the software that will work on different devices, while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
