The head of the EU military committee, General Robert Briger, called a possible victory a threat to all of Europe Russia in the war of aggression against Ukraine.
He spoke about this in an interview with Profil magazine.
A Russian takeover of Ukraine would shift Russian influence many kilometers to the west, the general said, creating a potential threat similar to that which existed during the Cold War.
At the same time, the head of the EU military committee recalled that in the event of any attack on EU member states, “the obligation to provide assistance will apply both in accordance with the EU Treaty and Article 5 of NATO, that is, on collective defense “.
“From a pragmatic point of view, NATO is likely to be the main actor because it has a command and control system that is not yet developed or developed in the EU to that extent. In such a scenario, however, the EU must also take on the task of protection, for example in the field of critical infrastructure,” said Briger.
At the same time, he does not exclude the creation of a European army “in the more distant future.” In this context, General Briger noted that the so-called EU “battlegroups” will be expanded to a rapid reaction force of 5 thousand troops and should be ready for deployment from 2025, mainly outside Europe and in addition to NATO.
Recall that Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia signed an agreement on the creation of the Baltic Defense Line to strengthen NATO's eastern border.
