Around the ancient Romans there are many myths and legends, many of which have nothing to do with reality. Alas, they do not talk about this in schools, and therefore often, talking about Ancient Rome, we are very much mistaken.
For example, few people know what the “thumbs up” gesture actually meant among the people. More about this – in the material “Rambler”.
In modern European society, it is believed that a raised finger means approval, agreement and, in general, is a positive gesture. However, in ancient Rome, everything was different.
During gladiatorial fights, pollice verso (from Latin – “turn of the thumb”) meant that the fighter would not be able to stay alive. However, the thumb down, was interpreted in the same way. To give life to a gladiator, it was necessary to show a fist.
As a rule, the decision about who will survive and who will die was made by the arbitrators based on the reaction of the crowd of spectators. According to some researchers, a thumbs up also meant a sword that needed to be thrust into the heart of a defeated gladiator.
