Exercise Zapad-2021 has become the largest military maneuver in the past 30 years. A huge scale, tens of thousands of fighters, new equipment at the training grounds – it would seem, what could be better? But not only the Russians are watching the exercises, but also our “likely partners”. NATO literally clung to the maneuvers to find out at least something about the new weapons of the Russian troops. For example, the United States has sent dozens of aircraft and drones to Europe, including B-52 strategic bombers, Boeing P-8 Poseidon anti-submarine aircraft, and Boeing RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft. Great Britain and France and even Denmark, Norway and Sweden were also noted, although the latter is not part of NATO.
ROBOTS COME
Fighting robots were especially impressed by the Western countries. Although they do not look like the huge walking machines from science fiction films, the Western media is seriously talking about them as a new combat superweapon.
“Russia has shown that it has begun to seriously prepare for the wars of the future,” writes the Turkish H rriyet. – Using artificial intelligence algorithms, such a machine can independently open fire on the enemy without obtaining the operator's permission.
The British Daily Mail generally marked its material about the exercises with a biting headline: “Wars of robots: Russia and Belarus try deadly combat robots and new machines during large-scale military exercises.” Their neighbors from Express go even further with materials “Vladimir Putin is preparing an invasion of the type of landing in Normandy, while Russia is preparing for war with the West” and “Putin showed deadly robotic tanks at exercises in Belarus.”
NORTH WIND
The Baltic countries are especially worried about the West-2021, because the Northern Fleet of our Navy is participating in the exercises. Norwegian Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen believes that “Russia could conduct many exercises closer to home, and there is no need to move so far with maneuvers and so approach our coastline, and in general, good relations with neighbors are built differently “. A very touching remark from the head of the military department, whose soldiers participated in the military operation “closer to home” in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Swedish media are also stirring up hysteria, but often local residents are already tired of the constant bogey of the “Russian bear”. As one reader of the Dagens Nyheter newspaper wrote: “I will not believe for a second that Putin is interested in Gotland. Russian exercises are clearly a threat, but our military exercises and arms build-up are so peaceful! “
Well, how can we do without the Balts! These countries traditionally raise panic every time Russian troops pass near their border. And now the commander of the Estonian Defense Forces Martin Herem said that “we must understand that the invasion of Estonia by Russia may happen in the coming years.” By the way, one of the readers of the Daily Express newspaper made fun of Hereom, writing: –
“Maybe it's time for the Baltics to start strengthening their defenses and stop hoping that London will defend them when Russia knocks on their door?”
Representatives of Poland are not lagging behind either.
– The threat level is at the highest level since the collapse of the USSR. We see a connection between the migration crisis and the West's exercises, – said the head of the Polish National Security Bureau Pavel Solokh.
Here are some more comments from Western readers about the Zapad-2021 exercise:
– Look, Putin is doing what we are doing – conducting exercises along the border.
– Russians are tough and serious guys. There are no shy whiners among them.
“Putin doesn't need a giant hovercraft to land on our shore. It is enough for him to throw us 14,000 illegal immigrants.
– Maybe it will be better if Putin will lead us?
