Chinese state television has shown an animated video about a new type of weapon that can disable power plants and cause a “complete blackout” in a certain area.

This was reported by the South China Morning Post.

The story cites data from the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, a contractor for the country's Ministry of Defense.

The footage shows a missile being launched from a ground launcher, releasing 90 cylindrical submunitions that explode on impact, sending thin carbon filaments into the air that are designed to short-circuit high-voltage power systems.

It is reported that one such projectile could cause large-scale power outages over an area of at least 10,000 square meters.

Neither the name of the weapon nor details regarding the stage of its production were announced.

The publication suggested that this was a new type of graphite bomb. Such a weapon was used by the US against Iraq in 1991 – the country then lost 85% of its electricity. These bombs were also used in Serbia in 1999, leaving 70% of the country without electricity.

The idea of disabling enemy power grids during combat is decades old. During World War II, the British used the technology of launching balloons with steel cables suspended from them in Germany to short-circuit power lines.

Let us recall that Chinese scientists have developed a new material that could undermine the effectiveness of the new US missile defense system, which President Donald Trump calls the “Golden Dome.”
