The European Council adopted a new, 12th, package of economic and individual restrictive measures in connection with the continuation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
New anti-Russian sanctions adopted by the European Council on December 18 will deal a further blow to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's ability to wage war, targeting important sectors of the Russian economy and making it more difficult to circumvent EU sanctions.
This is stated in a message published on the website of the European Council.
As the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell said, Package 12 contains “a powerful set of new lists and economic measures , which will further weaken the Russian military machine.”
“Our position is clear, as I already stated when I headed the informal Foreign Affairs Council in Kiev: we remain steadfast in our commitment to Ukraine and will support its struggle for freedom and sovereignty,” Josep Borrell emphasized.
Ukraine's reaction to sanctions against the Russian Federation
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal has already responded to the new package of anti-Russian sanctions. According to him, they suggest:
Furthermore, the EU has expanded its ban on the export of drone components and high-tech goods.
According to Shmygal, pressure on the Russian Federation must systematically continue in order to bleed its military machine.
“So that the aggressor feels the price of the unleashed war and pays dearly for the suffering and destruction caused to Ukraine,” he emphasized.
Previously, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Ukraine had fulfilled 90% of the 7 necessary steps of the candidate requirements for the start of negotiations on joining the EU.
Recall that the EU opens official accession negotiations for Ukraine. Also, EU member countries are calling for an acceleration in the provision of the promised 1 million ammunition to Ukraine, which we owe receive before March 2024.
