“We are defending ourselves so that no one else loses either life or history”: Zelenskaya’s emotional speech at UNESCO

Russia continues to destroy and terrorize our state, as it has been doing for decades.

Elena Zelenskaya appealed to UNESCO with a request to expand its presence in Ukraine. The fact is that the scale of crimes committed by the Russian Federation is incredible.

The first lady said this during her speech at the UNESCO conference.

Ukraine found itself between barbarism and civilization

According to Zelenskaya, today UNESCO is one of the few world organizations that truly effectively stands on the border between civilization and chaos, between memory and culture and modern barbarism.

“We ask to expand UNESCO’s presence in Ukraine. Now I will explain why this is important. The scale of the crimes is incredible. It will take us decades to restore what was destroyed, but the most important thing is to record what happened and is happening,” she emphasized.

It is worth remembering, the first lady emphasized, the terrible events of 1937, when more than 100 figures of Ukrainian culture and art were shot by the Soviet authorities in the Sandarmokh tract in Karelia. There was a greater force than other murders and persecutions that were used by the USSR against the Ukrainians.

“That’s why we are so defensive now. Because this time could be the final act of this tragedy. We need authoritative witnesses with a guarantee of immunity, because even now it can be dangerous to testify about terror,” Zelenskaya noted.

In her opinion, what Ukraine is going through should not be our problem. Because this is an attack not only on us, but on everything that is valuable to a normal person.

“It’s just that today we find ourselves between barbarism and civilization and are trying to protect life from destruction, from abrasion. So that no one else loses either history or life. I urge you to support Ukraine even more, the Ukrainians who did not start this war did not want it,” – summed up the first lady of Ukraine Elena Zelenskaya.

Previously, the international organization UNESCO, as of July 26, 2023, confirmed the damage to 274 cultural sites in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
