War is the 'No. 1 global risk' in 2025: World Economic Forum survey

The most likely causes of a possible global crisis this year include natural disasters, geo-economic confrontation, disinformation and social stratification.

“Armed conflict at the state level” is the most pressing problem of 2025, according to about a quarter of the 900 respondents to the annual survey, which for the 20th time, the Swiss non-governmental organization “World Economic Forum” (WEF) held before the annual meeting in Davos.

Bloomberg writes about this.

The subject of the meeting, which will bring together 3,000 participants – leading businessmen, politicians and journalists – will traditionally be the most pressing global problems.

“The growth of geopolitical tensions, the split in global trust and the climate crisis are straining the global system like never before. In a world marked by deepening divisions and cascading risks, global leaders have a choice: promote cooperation and resilience or face worsening instability,” said WEF Managing Director Mirek Dušek, commenting on the survey results.

The top 5 risks that are most likely to lead to a global crisis in 2025 are:

War is perceived in the world as the biggest risk, especially in light of the fact that the promise of the new US President Donald Trump to “end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours” was obviously just pre-election bravado. At the same time, he declared US claims to Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal, without ruling out the possibility of a forceful solution to the issue.

Meanwhile, outgoing US President Joe Biden said that in the Middle East, Hamas and Israel are “on the brink” of concluding an agreement a year and three months after the start of the “War of Iron Swords” in Gaza. Only time will tell how realistic this is.

At the same time, the survey participants named disinformation as the main risk for the entire world in the short term up to two years, and extreme weather events in the long term over the next decade.

Also included in the list of global risks:

According to the survey, the severity of all the problems listed in the rating increases in the long term. The report on the survey results says that this reflects “reported concern about the increased frequency or intensity of these risks in the next decade.”

The World Economic Forum in Davos will begin on January 23. One of its key topics will be geopolitics. Donald Trump is expected to participate in the forum virtually. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will also take part in the forum.

Recall that according to a new study, Ukraine is among the most dangerous countries in the world to visit in 2024. For the second year in a row, our country has demonstrated very high risks associated with the safety of life and health due to a full-scale war.
