Security experts have described a second attack vector such as Meltdown on AMD processors. Experts have already encountered the first one this year.
According to the report of the specialists of the CISPA Information Security Center named after I. Helmholtz, which Anti-Malware refers to, is about launching a Meltdown attack on AMD processors, although it was previously believed that these devices are not susceptible to such vulnerabilities.
The danger lies in the use of x86 PREFETCH instructions targeting confidential information. During an attack, the operator gains access to protected memory from code that does not have the appropriate rights. Moreover, even when attacking a virtual machine, a cybercriminal can gain access to the physical memory of the host machine and, along the chain, access the memory of another virtual machine on the same host.
According to experts, the danger of Meltdown is that when using this method, the border between the user application and the operating system is erased. A malicious program can enter directly into the kernel memory and pull out the most important data: passwords, keys, etc.
But the biggest pitfall is that, due to seeming security, AMD did not have patches from attacks like Meltdown until recently. So far, the vendor has asked the developers to use safe programming methods.
It is also noted that hacker attacks on the Meltdown vector will be difficult to detect. Therefore, the vendor has a lot of work to do.
