Authorities urged people not to approach the volcano.

Mount Merapi erupts in Indonesia. The volcano threw ash to a height of about three kilometers. Several villages were covered with ash.

The Guardian reports this.

Authorities banned local residents and foreigners from carrying out any activities within a 3 km radius of the volcano's crater.

However, 75 climbers ended up on top, who the day before had begun their journey to the 2891-meter-high volcanic mountain. More than 160 people, including police and soldiers, were involved in the search for them.

“26 people were not evacuated, we found 14 of them: three alive and 11 dead. 12 climbers are still missing,” said Abdula Malik, head of the search and rescue agency in the resort town of Padang.

“Some suffered burns because it was very hot and were taken to hospital. The victims were those who came close to the crater,” said Rudy Rinaldi, head of the province's Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Mount Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Its height is 2963 meters.

The last major eruption occurred in 2010, when 350 people died and 280 thousand people were evacuated. The Merapi eruption in 1930 killed 1,300 people, and the 1994 eruption killed 60 local residents.

Recall that Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has more volcanoes than any other country. In total, there are about 130 active volcanoes in the country.

Indonesia is located at the junction of continental plates, which causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
