The Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland has erupted after weeks of intense earthquakes < strong>volcano.

The eruption began four kilometers from Grindavik. Previously, about four thousand city residents were evacuated.
A state of emergency has been declared in Iceland due to a possible volcanic eruption. A helicopter was brought to the site to assess the scale of the eruption.
A crack about 3.5 km long has appeared in the volcano , and the lava flow speed is from 100 to 200 cubic meters per second. The Meteorological Office notes that this is several times more than during previous eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in recent years.
Reykjanes is a volcanic and seismic hotspot southwest of the capital city of Reykjavik. In March 2021, lava fountains erupted from a 500-750 meter long fissure in the ground of the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system.
Iceland has 33 active volcanic systems, the largest number in Europe.
