The chief researcher at the Gamaleya Center, virologist Anatoly Altstein, has found an explanation for the hearing impairment in coronavirus, which British scientists considered a new symptom of infection. He shared his opinion with REN TV.
“The fact is that the coronavirus can infect blood vessels in various places in the human body,” the expert explained. However, he noted that hearing impairment is not a specific symptom of COVID-19 and can accompany other diseases.
Altstein added that the coronavirus can damage various systems of the human body, so patients may indeed have hearing problems. At the same time, this symptom is much less common than, for example, loss of smell, the virologist believes.
Earlier, scientists from University College London and the Royal National Committee said that changes in hearing may indicate coronavirus infection. As the experts found out, some of the patients who were diagnosed with the coronavirus had previously complained of tinnitus – ringing or tinnitus.
