Virologist Alexander Chepurnov told why accurate diagnosis of infection with the “delta” strain is important and named the treatment features of this type of COVID-19. He spoke about this during a conversation for Sputnik radio.
As the expert noted, in order to determine the exact strain in a patient, it is necessary to decipher the genome of the virus by sequencing. Moreover, for this it is enough to take several small but significant sections of the genome. This method is more expensive and longer than PCR, and also requires more effort at the stage of processing the virus.
Chepurnov emphasized that the usual PCR test can be configured in such a way as to identify a particular strain. However, not all developers of systems for determining the coronavirus have come to this yet, since this is simply not enough yet.
In this case, the treatment of the “delta” depends on how the disease develops. Doctors have to change the already established treatment protocols for the “Wuhan” variant of the coronavirus.
Chepurnov noted that in the Indian variety, the gastroenterological component plays an important role, as well as the rate of development of the disease. Doctors do not yet have a clear idea of whether this option causes a more severe course of the disease.
