Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the NSU laboratory of biotechnology and virology, Sergei Netesov, in an interview with Izvestia, assessed the possibility of a coronavirus leak from a laboratory in Wuhan.
According to him, there were shortcomings at the beginning of the laboratory's work. “Skirting boards are prohibited in BSL-4 laboratories. There, a self-leveling floor and a rounded transition from the floor to the walls are made so that there is no dust and cracks. So in the Wuhan Institute, some of the rooms were, apparently, not decorated like that. And this is a gross violation, because a pathogen can get there, ”he noted.
Netesov noted that later the Chinese scientists called in an international group of experts, which found a sufficient number of shortcomings in them. However, work in the building was started almost immediately, before the experts' visit. “True, then it seems that these shortcomings were corrected and the work was stopped for the time of correction, so, apparently, there was a period when security was not at the highest level. But this correction process took place until 2019, as far as I know, ”he stressed.
