Violation of the language law: mayors of 20 cities urged to dismantle outdoor advertising

Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremen called on the mayors of 20 Ukrainian cities to dismantle outdoor advertising that was placed in violation of the language law.

The press service clarified that they continue to receive numerous complaints from citizens due to the placement of advertisements in a non-state language. Information for general information is also indicated in this way – on signs, inscriptions and tablets.

Among the cities whose leaders received a letter from the language ombudsman:

  1. Odessa,
  2. Kyiv,
  3. Dnieper,
  4. Kharkov,
  5. Kherson,
  6. Zaporozhye,
  7. Sumy,
  8. Kherson,
  9. Poltava,
  10. Cherkasy,
  11. Chernihiv,
  12. Kropyvnytsky,
  13. Chernivtsi,
  14. Uzhgorod,
  15. Berehove,
  16. Kremenchug,
  17. Mariupol,
  18. Kramatorsk,
  19. Krivoy Rog,
  20. Bakhmut.

In addition, letters were received by the leaders of the Slavyansk, Volnovakha, Lisichansk and Severodonetsk city military-civilian administrations.

The press service said that in 2021 they received 393 appeals on signs of non-compliance with the language law on signs and outdoor advertising, which accounted for 11% of the total number of appeals.

Most violations were recorded in Kharkiv (95), Lugansk (41) regions and in Kiev (43).
