Violation of Internet users' rights found in new Russian law

by alex

In Russia, a law was passed on the “Runet meter”. According to it, the authorities will have to receive a lot of data about the audience of online media and various services. Business representatives criticized the law, noting that the volume and composition of the collected data within its framework is excessive. And yet all this violates the rights of citizens.

According to Kommersant, the meter will receive the user's personal identifier, IP address, geolocation data and information about the content viewed, up to the listing of article titles. The goal of the law, meanwhile, is the counting of the audience.

The fact is that geolocation data falls under the secret of communication. Experts say that, in general, passing user IDs to the meter increases the risk of identifying a person. And this is already a violation of the right to privacy.

It is alleged that the Ministry of Digital Industry has already consulted with market participants. As a result of the meeting, we made “significant changes”.
