The man who killed four people and injured 22 more in the attack in Vienna was neutralized by armed police within nine minutes. This was stated by Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer, reports Reuters.
The attack began at about 20:00 local time (22:00 Moscow time). According to Nehammer, officers of a special unit were called to the scene and stopped the incident by shooting the man by 20.09 (22:09 Moscow time). According to the head of the Austrian Ministry of Internal Affairs, without their quick intervention, everything could be worse.
Earlier, Nehammer said that the terrorist outwitted the de-radicalization program. According to the minister, the curators of the program had the impression that the attacker was successfully integrating into society. In reality, it turned out that he simply successfully disguised himself, becoming more radicalized.
The shooting in the Austrian capital began on the evening of November 2: the first shots were fired at the synagogue in the city center. It was reported that almost simultaneously with this, several more people opened fire in other places. Later it became known that the security forces managed to shoot one of the attackers, while the others were being sought.
According to media reports, the eliminated intruder is a 20-year-old native of Vienna, Curtin S. He has Albanian roots, although his parents are from North Macedonia. He also holds dual Macedonian-Austrian citizenship. It is reported that the young man was known to intelligence: he was one of 90 Austrian Islamists who wanted to go to fight in Syria. The Austrian Interior Ministry has already described him as an Islamist terrorist.
