Victory Day: The European Council decided to begin negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU

Vladimir Zelensky called this decision a victory for Ukraine.

On Thursday, December 14, the European Council decided to begin negotiations on accession to EU of Ukraine and Moldova. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called this decision a victory for Ukraine and a victory for all of Europe.

The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced the decision on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

He also added that the European Council has granted candidate status to Georgia. And negotiations on accession to the EU with Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to him, will begin when this country reaches the required level of compliance with the membership criteria.

Immediately reacted to the decision of the European Council President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.

“This is a victory for Ukraine. A victory for all of Europe. A victory that motivates, inspires and strengthens,” he wrote, retweeting Charles Michel’s message.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said today is a “historic day.”

“Despite all the difficulties, we have reached a decision to begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Both Ukraine and Moldova have done their homework and are ready to take the next steps towards joining our European family,” she wrote she.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Mezola reacted to today's decision with an emotional video, in which she recalled the main milestones on Ukraine's path to the EU during the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. “Europe is Ukraine. Ukraine is Europe,” she signed the published footage in Ukrainian.

Recall that the European Council recommended starting formal negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on accession to the EU.
