The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank nearly half an hour after leaving Ketapang port in East Java late Wednesday, according to the National Search and Rescue Agency. The ferry was heading to Gilimanuk port in Bali, a 50-kilometer journey.

Police said many of those rescued were initially unconscious after drifting for hours in rough waters.

Nine boats, including two tugboats and the same number of inflatable boats, searched for the missing people, battling waves up to 2 meters high in the darkness of the night.

By the way, the publication noted that ferry tragedies are common in Indonesia, an archipelago with more than 17,000 islands. Ferries are often used as transport, and safety rules are not always followed.
