A technical defect stopped Max Verstappen in Imola on Friday, but the Red Bull driver struck in the third free practice session.
The Dutchman, who was slowed down by a drive shaft defect in the second free practice session, had set the clear best time of 1: 14.958 on Saturday morning, thus underpinning his role as favorite for qualifying (2 p.m.).
McLaren driver Lando Norris surprised with second place. The Briton was 0.456 seconds back. World champion Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes followed in third place (+0.557), Sergio Perez came fourth in the second Red Bull (+0.539).
In a training session characterized by canceled lap times due to driving over the track barriers, Ferrari had again presented itself on the upswing. Charles Leclerc landed in fifth place (+0.780), Friday's best-time holder Valtteri Bottas only came eighth (+0.950).
The German pilots were just following again. Sebastian Vettel didn't get past 14th place in the Aston Martin (+1.431), Mick Schumacher came in good 16th place (+1.490) in the defeated Haas.
