Colonel Vadim Sukharevsky was appointed commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Vadim Sukharevsky was deputy commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky from February 10, 2024.

Before his appointment, he was the commander of the 59th separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakov Handzyuk, which includes one of the best units for using UAVs — company tactical group Birds of Madyar.

Biography of Vadim Sukharevsky – basic facts

Vadim Olegovich Sukharesky was born on October 6, 1984 in the city of Beregovo, Transcarpathian region.

Graduated from the Mukachevo Lyceum with enhanced military-physical training.

From February to October 2004, he participated in a peacekeeping mission in Iraq as part of the 6th separate mechanized brigade. Participated in the three-day battle for Al-Kut with militants of the Magdi Army, during which Ukrainian forces defended objects in the province of Wasit, transferred under their protection.

After returning from Iraq, Sukharevsky entered the Lvov Institute of Land Forces of the National University of Lvov Polytechnic, specializing in combat use and control of the actions of airmobile units, which he graduated in 2009.

In 2011, senior lieutenant Sukharevsky was appointed commander of the airmobile company of the 80th separate airmobile regiment. Noted as one of the regiment's two best company commanders.

Vadim Sukharevsky has been defending Ukraine since the Russian invasion of the East began in 2014:

  • On April 13, 2014, he took part in the first battle of the war in Donbass near Semenovka (in the Slavyansk area). He opened fire from a heavy machine gun on an armored personnel carrier at Igor Girkin’s militants and supported the fighters of the SBU Alpha special unit. After this, the Russian mercenaries retreated. Only six Alpha fighters and Sukharevsky’s armored personnel carrier took part in the battle.
  • August 16, 2014 was wounded in the battle near Krasnoye.
  • From 2014 to 2016 he studied at the Ivan Chernyakhovsky National Defense University of Ukraine.
  • In 2016, he was appointed commander of the 1st line battalion of the 36th Marine Brigade. Carried out a mission in the Mariupol direction.
  • In June 2020, he received the rank of lieutenant colonel.
  • In 2021, he was appointed chief of staff of the 35th separate marine brigade named after Rear Admiral Mikhail Ostrogradsky.
  • In February 2022, he was appointed commander of the 59th separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakov Handzyuk.
  • In the summer of 2022, Sukharevsky led the offensive on the front sector between Nikolaev and Kherson. Sukharevsky's units were among the first to enter the Kherson region during the offensive against the enemy and broke through the Russian defenses. On the battlefield, Sukharevsky’s subordinates showed ingenuity and resorted to non-standard approaches. In particular, we modified the batteries in DJI Mavic drones so that the copters could cover greater distances.
  • November 9, 2022, Sukharevsky’s brigade occupied the village of Zelenyi Gai, making Kherson accessible to artillery.

Colonel Vadim Sukharevsky – awards

Vadim Sukharevsky’s highest award is the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star. Sukharevsky received it in June 2022 for personal courage and heroism shown in defending the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Colonel Sukharevsky also has several orders:

  • Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III class. (July 19, 2014) – for personal courage and heroism shown in defending the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
  • Order of the People's Hero of Ukraine (August 2, 2015).
  • Order For Courage III Art. (December 4, 2020) — for personal merits in strengthening the defense capability of the Ukrainian state, courage and selfless actions shown in protecting the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, exemplary performance of military duty.
  • Order of Courage II Art. (April 14, 2023) – for personal courage shown in defending the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, selfless fulfillment of military duty.

In April 2023, a street in his native Beregovo was named in honor of Sukharevsky.
