One of the developers of the AstraZeneca vaccine, professor at the University of Oxford Sarah Gilbert, warned that future pandemics could be more dangerous and more deadly than the coronavirus pandemic. Her words are reported by The Washington Post.
“This will not be the last time the virus threatens our lives and our livelihoods. The truth is, the next [time] could be even worse. It can be more infectious, or more deadly, or both together, ”the expert explained.
She also called for more active funding for research and said that a situation should not be allowed in which, after huge investments in the fight against the pandemic, the world is not ready for new infections. Gilbert compared pandemics to war: in her words, just as states invest in diplomacy and defense, they need to invest in protecting against viruses.
Earlier, the director of the Gamaleya Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, Alexander Gunzburg, predicted new waves of the coronavirus pandemic every three months. “If we do not get vaccinated in a short time, every three months we will have a new wave and count them indefinitely – the fifth, tenth, twentieth,” the specialist emphasized.
