The referee's decision upset the Mexican coach Gerardo Martino so much that he was expelled from the field and the Mexican fans threw various objects onto the field. Giovanni Reyna, 2-1 scorer, was hit in the face by an object.
Andres Guardado had the chance to make it 3: 3 in stoppage time. The substitute goalie Ethan Horvath, who came in for the injured Zack Steffen, became the match winner when he parried the hand penalty shortly before the final whistle.
