USA wins CONCACAF championship – final victory over Mexico

by alex

The USA won the final of the Nations League of the North and Central America Association CONCACAF against Mexico 3-2 after extra time on Sunday. The game in Denver was dramatic and highly emotional and had to be interrupted in stoppage time due to homophobic and discriminatory shouts and chants from some of the Mexican spectators in Empower Field.

A penalty in the 114th minute from Christian Pulisic, the Champions League winner with Chelsea, released the US team, which had equalized a deficit twice. The referee's decision upset the Mexican coach Gerardo Martino so much that he was expelled from the field and the Mexican fans threw various objects onto the field. Giovanni Reyna, 2-1 scorer, was hit in the face by an object.

Andres Guardado had the chance to make it 3: 3 in stoppage time. The substitute goalie Ethan Horvath, who came in for the injured Zack Steffen, became the match winner when he parried the hand penalty shortly before the final whistle.
