The United States named Russia and China as the main threats to the country. This is stated in the transitional provisions of the national security strategy, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the document, Moscow intends to continue to expand its global influence and play a destabilizing role in the international arena.
At the same time, the text calls China the main potential adversary and the only competitor that can seriously challenge the existing stable and open international system. Thus, according to the United States, Beijing is becoming more and more confident in its abilities.
It is noted that Russia and China have invested significant efforts in containing the advantages of the United States and not allowing Washington to defend its interests and allies in the international arena.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden extended for a year the sanctions against Russia, imposed seven years ago in connection with the events in Crimea and Ukraine.
Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 after a referendum in which the majority of the region's residents who voted supported such a decision. Ukraine, the EU countries and the US refused to recognize the results of the vote, calling the reunification of the peninsula with mainland Russia an annexation.
