The US State Department has warned the Armenian military against interfering in the country's politics. The statement of the representative of the American department Ned Price is reported by RIA Novosti.
“We remind all parties of the basic democratic principle that the armed forces of states should not interfere in domestic politics,” Price said. He called on the leaders of the conflict to resolve differences peacefully and avoid any escalation and violence.
According to Price, the United States supports the democratic processes and institutions of Armenia, as well as its sovereignty, and is closely monitoring the situation. At the same time, the State Department did not come to the conclusion whether there was an attempted coup d'etat in Armenia.
On February 25, the military leadership of Armenia demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He called it a coup attempt. The National Security Service sided with the prime minister.
Supporters and opponents of Pashinyan rally in the streets of Yerevan. Protests have continued in Armenia since the end of the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The opposition forces accuse the prime minister of betraying the national interests of the country; they have created a political movement “For the salvation of the homeland”, which included representatives of 17 parties and organizations. Pashinyan himself said that he was clean before the people.
